Stroke is the number three killer in the United States, and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability. May is American Stroke Month and the American Stroke Association offers these common warning signs of stroke.
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
- Sudden confusion, and trouble speaking or understanding
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness and loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause
If you or someone you are with begin to exhibit any of these signs call Hatzalah or 9-1-1 immediately. Medical treatment that can possibly reverse the effects of a stroke must be administered within a relatively small window of time; seconds count so if in doubt, call for help at once.
The American Stroke Association is collaborating with different health organizations to provide stroke risk assessments throughout the state.
The assessments are free, and will educate on stroke, warning signs, risk factors and preventative steps to minimize risk. For more information and to locate a screening site near you, call 1-888-4-STROKE, or go to www.strokeassociation.org.
