Swine flu spreads worry but low risk

In Education, Health, Malka Eisenberg, News on April 29, 2009 at 1:04 am

By Malka Eisenberg
Issue of May 1, 2009 / 7 Iyar 5769

If you haven’t had the flu vaccine yet this year, don’t bother on account of the Swine flu.

“It’s too late to get the vaccine for the flu and the current vaccine would not give any benefit against Swine flu,” said Rabbi Dr. Aaron Glatt, a spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society of America and president and CEO of New Island Hospital in Bethpage, LI..

“The good news is that it’s very sensitive to the treatments that work against it. The regular influenza that came out was resistant to Tamiflu; this is not resistant to Tamiflu and there is enough available.”

Symptoms are standard for flu: fever, fatigue, aches, cough, sore throat, chills, runny nose, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Precautions include avoiding areas and those infected, covering one’s mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, discarding used tissues, washing hands thoroughly or properly using hand sanitizers, Read the rest of this entry »

It would be a big problem if a portion of an observant Jewish community were to lose faith in, say, kosher food supervision and became less careful about kashruth as a result.

Yet, that’s the kind of risk the Vaad HaKashrus of The Five Towns and Far Rockaway apparently decided to run when, with a month to Pesach, stores under its supervision were directed to turn away matzo and matzo products made by the iconic Streit’s company.

There was no new or otherwise urgent information about Streit’s kashruth or any belief that the fitness of its products for Passover was in any way compromised. In fact, the Vaad said that Streit’s products could be used on Passover and there was no need to return or replace items Read the rest of this entry »

For a few anxious minutes it seemed that the sun did not want to be blessed but then the clouds parted.

According to tradition the sun returns to the place it occupied at the time of creation once every 28 years. 2009 was the year and April 8 was the day. Several hundred people gathered in Cedarhurst Park on the Wednesday morning of Erev Pesach Read the rest of this entry »

EXCLUSIVE to The Jewish Star / Issue of April 10, 2009 / 16 Nissan 5769

Every conversation with a kashruth professional about Streit’s Matzo –– on the record or off –– eventually winds up in the same place: no one wants to be disrespectful to the memory of Rabbi Ahron Soloveichik zt”l whose name was on the Streit’s box from the mid-50s until his death in 2001 — or to hurt his son, Rabbi Moshe Soloveichik, who gives the hashgacha (kosher certification) today — by publicly raising a concern that the quality of supervision at Streit’s has slipped in recent years.

Breaking: Child abuse bill criticized as ‘red herring’ makes it out of committee after all

Hikind straddles fence supporting Child Victims Act and weaker Lopez bill

By Michael Orbach
April 3, 2009 — Web Exclusive

Proposed child abuse legislation that had been left for dead got an unusual new lease on life this week when it passed a New York State Assembly committee after first being soundly defeated.

The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Vito Lopez (D-Brooklyn), would extend the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse for civil cases by two years. A redrafted version of the bill passed the Codes Committee on Tuesday by a margin of 18-1. The bill will now be voted on in the full Assembly, before making its way to the State Senate.

Sexual abuse activists have criticized the Lopez bill saying that it would help sexual predators. They claim it is meant to detract attention from the Child Victims Act, stronger legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Marge Markey (D-Queens), which would extend the civil and criminal statutes Read the rest of this entry »

Number six school in Woodmere to close

Decision made at tense board meeting

By Michael Orbach
Issue April 3, 2009 / 9 Nissan 5769

The No. Six school in Woodmere will close in June.

The announcement was made March 23 at a meeting of the Lawrence school board. The reasoning behind the decision was not publicly discussed at the meeting, which was punctuated by bitter comments from members of the public.

Superintendent John Fitzsimons noted that the board was faced with a choice between closing the No. Four school, the No. Five, or the No. Six.

“We made it clear that no matter what decision they would make, we could make it work educationally,” Fitzsimons explained in a telephone interview. “If were so easy, that one [school] far outweighed the other, there wouldn’t be options.”

Dwindling enrollment in the Lawrence school system, decreasing more than two percent annually, prompted the decision.

“In light of what’s happening to us economically Read the rest of this entry »

Proposal to apply most of the proceeds to purchase of Inwood campus

By Mayer Fertig
Issue of April 3, 2009 / 9 Nissan 5769

Parents at Shulamith School for Girls are being asked to sign a proposal supporting the sale of the school’s Flatbush campus to buy a new facility in Inwood for Bnot Shulamith. The school is negotiating to lease a school building near the current Brooklyn campus, according to an accompanying letter signed by school president Sam Gross.

Administrators and teachers have toured the space on East 21st Street between Avenues K and L, “and determined that it is adequate to house Shulamith’s student body,” the letter said.

In an apparent show of confidence in the proposed location, Gross said that parents would be contacted to schedule similar tours “to satisfy the parent body that, with this available space, all is in order, and Shulamith is staying in Brooklyn.”

The text of the proposal begins by stating that an audit by an independent accounting firm determined “that the Brooklyn campus has been losing significant amounts of money Read the rest of this entry »
