My father, a theology professor turned software developer, a man who is generally inured to the trappings of wealth, has a favorite story regarding my great uncle Jack. Once while my father was dining at my uncle’s London home, my great uncle finished the main course, then placed his expensive china plate on the floor and called his dog. The dog, a runt named Toddy who pawed my uncle’s leg mercilessly throughout the meal, licked the plate clean.

My great aunt Ruth, needless to say, was not pleased.

My great uncle is Jack Lunzer, whose collection of 13,000 rare Hebrew books and manuscripts, collectively known as the Valmadonna Trust Library, was put on auction at Sotheby’s this past week for an asking price of $40 million. It is widely considered to be the finest collection of Hebrew books in private hands, all of which Jack amassed over six decades. Read the rest of this entry »

target_logoAlmost more than anything else, she looked like she needed a hug. But myriad other considerations aside, that wouldn’t happen because it might have drawn attention to the hurried whispers of a conversation she and a stranger were conducting behind a checkout counter at Target Monday night. They were behind the magazine rack trying to keep out of sight of her 10-year-old son, and the stranger’s two children waiting on the next aisle; all the more so after she burst into tears and fought to regain her composure.

He had noticed her first but pretended not to, so as to not embarrass her. It was almost 10:00 p.m., just before closing, and she was at the checkout accompanied by her son, and a baby carriage, seeming to wish the floor would open beneath her as the cashier carefully counted a large pile of change.

The stranger and his daughter and son moved to the next aisle. He was studiously ignoring the scene playing out four feet to his left when suddenly she appeared, and motioned for his attention. He walked over and she, trying to sound casual, said, “How would you like to do a mitzvah (good deed)?”

He understood at once that the pile of change had not gone far enough; he reached for his wallet. Read the rest of this entry »

A winter flurry of “Dear President Obama” letters — in the forms of op-eds and paid advertisements — have swirled around the public square in the days since the 44th president of the United States was sworn into office.

Some of the open letters have concerned Mr. Obama’s economic stimulus plan; others, United States relations with Iran; others still, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Whether the President pays any attention to the multitudinous missives is anyone’s guess. But if I had his ear (or his BlackBerry contact information), I think my own message would consist of a simple video clip. Read the rest of this entry »

A fairly common condition that is often overlooked is bulimia. Bulimia is an eating disorder more common in young women than in men. It is estimated that as many as 20 percent of teenage girls may be bulimic, but cleverly conceal the problem so that even their parents are unaware of it.

Raising bar on bris practices — Your Health 2-13-09

Opinion

By Rabbi Avi Billet

Issue of Feb. 13, 2009 / 19 Shevat 5769

Relative to other surgeries, bris milah is a simple procedure, with a surprisingly low risk rate. At the same time, an incision, an open wound and the removal of skin tissue necessitate precautions which will minimize danger to the child. The parents and the mohel must be on the same page on this latter point.

In an operating room, a surgeon takes many precautions to minimize the chance of bacterial infection reaching the patient. Mohels should be held to these same standards when operating on infant boys. It is understood, of course, that the public nature of the ceremony makes complete sterility an impossibility. Nonetheless, we are a far cry from where standards should be.

The sterility litmus test can be broken down to five components: how instruments are sterilized, how they are laid out for bris use, how the mohel cleans his hands, whether sterile gloves are worn when dealing with the open wound and how metzitzah is done.

Surgeons sterilize packaged instruments in a machine at 273° Fahrenheit, and avoid opening the “sterility guaranteed” package until surgery time. Read the rest of this entry »

Yeshiva University denies Madoff link as 60 are laid off

This is an updated version of the exclusive story posted Monday Feb. 9, 2009

Yeshiva University laid off 60 employees this week in a move that a spokesman described as part of its continuing response to the global economic downturn.

President Richard Joel made the grim announcement in a letter to the “Yeshiva University Community,” which was obtained by The Jewish Star and first reported on its Web site Monday night.

The cuts will be made across the university’s Manhattan campuses, as part of an effort to trim the budget by $30 million, Joel said.

Other employees were offered compensation packages to leave their jobs without being laid off; some will voluntarily work fewer hours; all salaries across the university are frozen, said Rick Matthews of the public relations firm Rubenstein & Associates. The firm was retained in the wake of the Bernard Madoff debacle in December.

Madoff, the former chairman of Yeshiva’s Sy Syms School of Business, and the $110 million Yeshiva first estimated had been lost to his alleged Ponzi scheme, were not a factor in the layoffs, Matthews said.

“The endowment had already been impacted significantly by the global economic downturn,” Read the rest of this entry »

Breaking News: Yeshiva University announces layoffs

An updated version of this story is posted here

The Jewish Star has learned that Yeshiva University will lay off 60 employees. This follows the announcement several months ago of millions of dollars in losses incurred in the debacle involving Bernard Madoff, former chairman of Yeshiva’s Sy Syms School of Business.

President Richard Joel made the grim announcement Monday in a letter addressed to the “Yeshiva University Community,” obtained by The Jewish Star.

The cuts will be made across the university’s Manhattan campuses in an attempt to trim the budget by $30 million, he said.

An angry YU employee who lost her job on Monday spoke to The Jewish Star on the condition that she not be identified.

“They affect the little people, the people that make the university run. The administration is the bread and butter of the university. Had all the senior staff taken a two percent cut it wouldn’t have been necessary to cut all these jobs for the people that aren’t making that much money… Richard Joel makes half a million dollars a year. Why didn’t he take a pay cut? ” Read the rest of this entry »

Rabbi Noach Weinberg zt”l, the Brooklyn-born dean and founder of Yeshiva Aish HaTorah, who was responsible for the return of thousands of Jews to traditional observance, died Wednesday after a brief battle with cancer. He was 78.

A brief statement on the Aish Hatorah website said, in part, “Rabbi Weinberg lived with the reality that all the revealed things are our responsibility. If masses of Jews are assimilating, it’s our responsibility to bring each and every one back. If there is a threat to the Jewish Nation or to the Western world, it cannot  be ignored.” Read the rest of this entry »

In My View

rabbi-herschel-billet-headshotBy Rabbi Herschel Billet
Issue of Feb. 6, 2009 / 12 Shevat 5769

Recently a video circulated on the Internet in which a prominent Torah scholar responded impatiently when asked by a member of his audience to clarify the disparity between the traditional Jewish calendar year of 5769 and the scientific dating system, which speaks of the age of the earth in numbers exponentially higher than 5769. Essentially he went on to attack a prominent rabbi/author (without referencing his name) who suggested that indeed it is not contrary to traditional Jewish faith to maintain that both 5769 and scientific numbers are reasonable and can coexist.

When I went to high school there were several approaches as to how to deal with the section in the biology textbook that dealt with the age of the Earth. Suffice it to say that then, as now, the contradiction was there. One approach was the Scissors and Paste/Black Out Method. Essentially, this method excised the offending section from the book. It was efficient, but intellectually unsatisfactory. Read the rest of this entry »

Azriel Ganz: The Jewish charities crisis, part two

tzedakah-box-2Where do we go from here?

By Azriel Ganz
Issue of Feb. 6, 2009 / 12 Shevat 5769

In my previous essay, I suggested that in order for Jewish charities to survive the current economic downturn, they would have to do three things: Develop a strategic focus, cut costs and be more transparent. Interestingly, in addressing how we, as donors, should react to the economic crisis vis a vis Jewish charities, I think that we can employ the same tools to achieve the best results.

A note: charitable giving, tzedakah, is governed by a complex set of halachot (Jewish laws). I am not qualified, nor do I attempt here, to offer halachic guidance. I am merely suggesting a set of high level guiding principles. Each person should consult with his or her Rabbi in determining how to comply with the halachot of tzedakah.

Strategic Focus

In good times, many of us are happy to give tzedakah without much thought or focus. While this is never ideal, we are blessed to be in such a position. In difficult times, our resources are limited and our giving is more of a zero-sum game; each dollar we give to one organization is a dollar that cannot go to another. Read the rest of this entry »
